The addition of an inhibitor or retarder during polymerization processes can be considered as a good method to stop the reaction in case of temperature control loss. In this work two inhibitors/retarders have been used: hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone. A series of methylmethacrylate polymerization experiments under different conditions was carried out to understand the behaviour of these substances. In order to identify situations that can lead to a runaway reaction, a detection system based on the divergence criterion has been used. When this early warning detection system signals an alarm, small amounts of inhibitor/retarder have been added to the reaction mixture. The results show that hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone behave differently and that the reactor temperature can be kept within safe limits.
