Abstract

Crush initiators are used to decrease the entity of the first peak force that can be observed when a structurai member as a thin-walled metallic beam is dynamically axially crushed and to promote a well-defined collapse mechanism. Different crush initiators are analysed and their effects compared in terms of peak force reduction and mean force variation. Aluminium components have been considered for the investigation. To design effective crush initiators numerical simulations, using the finite element explicit code DYNA3D, have been performed. The rnost efficient solutions have been submitted to experimentaI validation by quasi-static axial compression tests. The obtained results can improve the design of the vehicle structure components devoted to the passive safety, limiting the effect of large deceleration values on the occupants without reducing the global energy absorption capability of the components.
