The concept of sustainable development represents a new side of economy in which objectives of environmental safeguarding need to be integrated with firm’s priority such as profit and competition. One of the most important aspect of this new approach is that on top of the problem of natural environment that become a social problem, come ethic implications. Environment doesn’t mean only natural resources, but all cultural and social factors and traditions; so, safeguarding the environment means to respect both nature and men. The firms that, during their productive activities, pursue the aim of more profit and less environmental impact, can realize a richer and more equal society, improving quality of life and balancing economical, social and ecological needs. The voluntary certification is, in this field, an opportunity for development, economic benefits and competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to underline the evolution of environmental certification, the importance of ethic certification and to analyse tools useful to firms for sharing part of their benefits with collectivity. In particular, this paper will underline the importance of these aspects for tourism, an high environmental and social impact sector, that is very important for local economy.
