A method to estimate the rotor position of salient AC motors is presented in this paper, based on the injection of a suitable couple of stationary sinusoidal stator voltage signals featuring two different frequencies. Due to the rotor magnetic saliency, two additional stator voltage components are generated orthogonally to the injected signals. Once detected, the two orthogonal signals can be demodulated using a standard Resolver-to-Digital device. According to the proposed approach, the machine itself acts as a virtual resolver, enabling the estimation of the rotor position even at zero speed and, differently from other sensorless approaches, without special computing devices. Although this paper is mainly focused on standard Synchronous Reluctance Machines, the proposed technique can be also applied to any AC machine featuring a salient structure. Results of experimental tests performed on a 1.5 kW motor drive are provided to evaluate the consistency and performance of the proposed control technique.
