SUMMARY - In a not blind field controlled trial the clinical efficacy and safety of meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime®), combined with allopurinol (Zyloric®) or spiramycin & metronidazole (Stomorgyl®), were evaluated in dogs with leishmaniasis. In all, 4 different treatment groups were compared: Glucantime® for 1 month and Stomorgyl® (6 dogs) or Zyloric® (9 dogs) for 90 days; Glucantime® for 2 months and Stomorgyl® (8 dogs) or Zyloric® (6 dogs) for 90 days. The clinical picture was scored using a numerical rate of the severity of clinical signs and changes in CBC, biochemical profile, albumin, globulins, proteinuria, IFAT titre. The 2 month course of antimony therapy produced better results than the 1 month course and the Stomorgyl® combination was better than the allopurinol combination.
