The possibility of laser beam welding clad steel plates in one pass with a single filler metal was investigated. Two procedures, one with a single-side laser beam and the other with a dual beam laser, were utilized for butt-joint welding of carbon steel plates clad with austenitic stainless steel. Filler metal was in the form of stripes, interposed within edges prior to welding. Metallographic observations and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy microanalysis were performed on welded specimens. Mechanical properties were evaluated by Vickers microhardness and tensile tests. These investigations have shown the possibility of making sound welds with a satisfactory composition and crack-free weld metal with both the experimental procedures.

Abstract
The possibility of laser beam welding clad steel plates in one pass with a single filler metal was investigated. Two procedures, one with a single-side laser beam and the other with a dual beam laser, were utilized for butt-joint welding of carbon steel plates clad with austenitic stainless steel. Filler metal was in the form of stripes, interposed within edges prior to welding. Metallographic observations and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy microanalysis were performed on welded specimens. Mechanical properties were evaluated by Vickers microhardness and tensile tests. These investigations have shown the possibility of making sound welds with a satisfactory composition and crack-free weld metal with both the experimental procedures.Pubblicazioni consigliate
