John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is a classic statement of empiricist epistemology. Locke's philosophy of science consists largely in his metaphysical and epistemological views of material substances and their powers. But if his epistemology helps to usher in the age of science, he still belongs to the age of natural philosophy. And if he is a devotee of the new science, he often appears an uncertain one, recognizing profound difficulties in it.

Abstract

John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is a classic statement of empiricist epistemology. The Essay is an attempt to establish what it is and isn’t possible for us to know and understand. The consequence of this empiricist approach is that the knowledge of which we are capable is severely limited in its scope and certainty.
