The absorption and luminescence were studied of 2,2'-bipyridine-based cryptates of Eu3+ and Tb3+. The cryptate complexes showed strong ligand-centered absorption bands in the UV, 104-105 times as intense as compared to the corresponding aquo complex's metal-centered f-f bands. The wavelength of the luminescence was unaffected by the cryptate or H2O ligands, but the lifetime of the excited state and the luminescence quantum yield were strongly altered. [on SciFinder(R)]
