The oxidn. of butane [106-97-8] and of its intermediates to maleic anhydride [108-31-6] was studied on different V-P oxides and on TiO2- and zeolites-supported V oxides. On V-P oxides the activity in butane selective oxidn. depended strongly on the catalyst microstructure. On supported V oxides butane was not selectively oxidized; however, when the amt. of V deposited largely exceeded the monolayer amt., low yields of HOAc [64-19-7] were obtained. Anal. of the oxidn. of some intermediates suggested that the mechanism of maleic anhydride formation from butane occurred through the successive formation of butadiene [106-99-0], 2,5-dihydrofuran [1708-29-8], and furan [110-00-9] via successive cycles of O insertion and allylic H-abstraction and that these properties were connected to the V ions and not to a particular surface structure. On the contrary, the alkane activation required a particular surface structure of V obtained by straining of V-(OP) bonds. A model of a mechanism for butane activation was also given. Abstract

The oxidn. of butane [106-97-8] and of its intermediates to maleic anhydride [108-31-6] was studied on different V-P oxides and on TiO2- and zeolites-supported V oxides.
