Modificazioni della cortisolemia in pecore gravide e in post-partum: effetto di un parto singolo o gemellare

Cortisol is considered a reliable physiological index of stress also in sheep. Pregnancy and post-partum conditions, the influence of a single or twin birth and the simultaneous milking may represent significant sources of stress for the mother and lambs. Aim of this study was to provide a contribution to the characterization of adrenal response in ewes during late pregnancy and post-partum, by taking into account the possible influence of single or twin birth on changes of circulating cortisol levels. The results showed that cortisol levels are in agreement with the physiological range reported for sheep and with previous data obtained in lactating ewes. Data obtained showed a significant increase of cortisol levels in post-partum compared to pregnancy, with a trend comparable between Comisana and Pinzirita crossbreds. As regards the influence of single or twin birth, the results showed higher cortisol levels in ewes with both single and twin birth in post-partum. In addition, the results showed increased cortisol levels in ewes with male births and both female and male births in post-partum.
