Abstract

The study aims to examine how the surplus of grain in ancient times was often used as a kind of political propaganda in the context of international relations in the Mediterranean. In particular, we analyze the reasoning behind the donation-sale at a good price by Gelon to Romans during a famine and the donation made by Hiero II when a devastating earthquake occurred in Rhodes in 227/6 B.C.
