Pigmentary keratitis develops secondary to chronic corneal irritation in the dog.The aim of this study is to perform a retrospective evaluation of corneal pigmentation’s frequency in canine chronic keratitis. Records of 198 dogs presented from January to December 2010 for ocular problems were reviewed.Data were collect in ophthalmic examination sheets. Among these cases, 30 dogs had corneal pigmention, localized in different areas of the cornea. Pigmentary keratitis was associated to many causes: keratoconjunctivitis sicca, nasal folds/medial entropion, chronic superficial keratitis, entropion, distichiasis/districhiasis and chronic glaucoma. Among all diseases, breed predisposition was evaluated too. Corneal pigmentation is most commonly associated with chronic inflammation. Early diagnosis is important to avoid pigment’s extension.
