Recommended iodine intake in pregnancy by WHO Technical Consultation is of 250 µg/day, roughly corresponding to an urinary iodine excretion of 185 µg/l. When this goal is not achieved, iodine intake is considered to be insufficient for the increased needs of both maternal and fetal thyroid. In fact, pregnancy represents the most vulnerable period of life if daily dietary iodine intake is inadequate. At that time, two individuals, mother and fetus, are simultaneously exposed to the potentially severe consequences of iodine deficiency. Different degrees of deficiency of this micronutrient during gestation can result in fatal events such as pregnancy interruption or, when pregnancy progresses, in brain damages leading to irreversible major or minor neuro-intellectual disorders in the offspring.
