The paper focuses on the possible links between the various meanings of Sic. sciàra, having reference to three different semantic fields: (1) ‘lava, magma’; (2) ‘thirsty, stony field; uncultivable land’; (3) ‘bramble; blackberry bush’. Only one etymon for all three meanings is proposed, Arabic šá‘ra, which usually is considered the etymological basis just for the meanings (2) and (3). Some different pathways are showed, also with the aid of the geolinguistics, through which the word sciàra has presumably assumed the three current semantic values.
