(ITA) Il contributo, frutto di una ricerca sulla consistenza e sull’attività delle scuole popolari in Sicilia nel periodo borbonico, intende mettere in luce i mutamenti e le persistenze nonchè le pratiche e gli atteggiamenti che caratterizzarono, in un periodo compreso fra la seconda metà del XVIII secolo e la prima metà del XIX, il “mestiere” del maestro della “scuola popolare”. L’ampio arco cronologico preso in considerazione (1788-1860), gravato da pesanti carestie e drammaticamente funestato dal colera e da catastrofi naturali, è denso di vicende e di profondi cambiamenti che, nel mutare gli assetti geografici, politici ed istituzionali dell’isola, ebbero anche un’incisiva ricaduta in ambito scolastico e, di conseguenza, sulla professione “docente”. Attraverso l’esame di fonti del tutto inedite, quali le dirette testimonianze dei maestri tratte da suppliche o memorie, le relazioni delle visite scolastiche stilate dagli ispettori e gli stati mensili compilati dalle deputazioni locali, si è cercato di tracciare il “profilo” del “maestro di a.b.c.” relativamente a tre diverse “generazioni”: il maestro “normale” decosmiano (1789), il maestro di “fine Regno” (1815) ed il maestro “lancastriano” (1857). (ENG) - This work is the result of a research concerning the consistency of educational activities in Sicilian popular schools during the Borbonic domination. It aims at emphasizing what was transformed and what remained unchanged in regards to the “profession” of “popular school” teacher, in a period that goes from the second half of XVIIIth century to the first half of XIXth century . Marked by severe famines and afflicted by cholera and natural disasters, this wide time span bears witness of major changes and important events that caused a revolution in the geographical, political and institutional asset of the island. Furthermore, also education and, as a consequence, the profession of “teacher” were involved in the process. The research focused on entirely unpublished sources, such as teachers’ statements included in petitions or memoirs, school visit reports written by inspectors and monthly accounts compiled by local deputations. By means of examining those documents, the present work intends to trace the “profile” of the “a.b.c. teacher” during three different “generations”: the “normal” Decosmian teacher (1788-1810), the teacher of the “decline of the Kingdom” (1810-1817), and the “Lancastrian” teacher (1857-1860).
