In this study 82 C. albicans isolates, recovered from Nigerian patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis, were screened for fluconazole resistance and DNA mutations in ERG11 gene. The obtained data showed that 14 isolates exhibited false fluconazole resistance (called "major error" condition) and were all found to carry a characteristic nucleotide transition (A945C). Our data suggest that nucleotide changes in ERG11 gene might also correlate with, or be responsible for, the origin of false positive results occurring during determination of the in vitro antifungal activity.

Abstract

In this study 82 C. albicans isolates, recovered from Nigerian patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis, were screened for fluconazole resistance and DNA mutations in ERG11 gene. The obtained data showed that 14 isolates exhibited false fluconazole resistance (called "major error" condition) and were all found to carry a characteristic nucleotide transition (A945C). Our data suggest that nucleotide changes in ERG11 gene might also correlate with, or be responsible for, the origin of false positive results occurring during determination of the in vitro antifungal activity.
