The volumetric anomaly of water was unambiguously documented for the first time in a scientific essay of the 17th century. However, it was not until the beginning of the 19th century that this unusual and somewhat counterintuitive phenomenon received an irrefutable experimental confirmation. We briefly revisit this fascinating story whose ante- factum can be dated back to a polemic debate on buoyancy and the nature of solid and liquid water that opposed Galileo to Lodovico delle Colombe and the Aristotelians, and which, for some aspects, still continues nowadays.

Abstract
The volumetric anomaly of water was unambiguously documented for the first time in a scientific essay of the 17th century. However, it was not until the beginning of the 19th century that this unusual and somewhat counterintuitive phenomenon received an irrefutable experimental confirmation. We briefly revisit this fascinating story whose ante- factum can be dated back to a polemic debate on buoyancy and the nature of solid and liquid water that opposed Galileo to Lodovico delle Colombe and the Aristotelians, and which, for some aspects, still continues nowadays.File in questo prodotto:
