Abstract

Control of Sicilian ports was subject to nullifying those peoples who aspired to the management and control of trade routes in the Mediterranean sea. Even in the Middle Ages arisen defense needs they forced the inhabitants of the island to settle in entrenched positions, more easily defensible, which gave rise to a settlement pattern confirmed in later centuries. Fortifications and monasteries are mostly the original nucleus of foundation of existing town centers, which are located along the axes of penetration into the interior of the isle. The road system that connected to each other such realities had an enormous importance for the spontaneous formation of preferential channels for the dissemination of diverse constructive knowledge of the different communities settled by allowing, at the same time, a significant contamination of knowledge. The organic maintenance of the road network operated in the Bourbon period resulted in a shift of population to the coasts more connected with the cities. The widespread architectural culture in medieval foundation centers, given the terrain rugged, mountainous island, reflects these guidelines diffusion characterizing this territory and is influenced by the geology of the places that conditioning the building materials available, affecting significantly even in construction systems adopted and technologies used in construction. This paper aims to present the architectural culture of the Valdemone area through some examples that could form the basis of a survey that concerns recently studied topics in this area.
