One wonders if the authenticity of two short scholia on Songs 2,6 and 8,3, transmitted by Greek exegetical catenae under the name of Cyril of Alexandria should be viewed with caution. So far it has seemed that the attribution to Cyril must be respected; but we may express reservations about such an opinion, on the basis of the exegetical content of the scholia, which shows links with the interpretations of other authors, and of their status in the manuscript tradition. The hypothesis is that they reflect the interpretation of Origen – partially received through the indirect tradition, in Latin versions of both Rufinus and Jerome – and of other exegetes who followed him.

Abstract
One wonders if the authenticity of two short scholia on Songs 2,6 and 8,3, transmitted by Greek exegetical catenae under the name of Cyril of Alexandria should be viewed with caution. So far it has seemed that the attribution to Cyril must be respected; but we may express reservations about such an opinion, on the basis of the exegetical content of the scholia, which shows links with the interpretations of other authors, and of their status in the manuscript tradition. The hypothesis is that they reflect the interpretation of Origen – partially received through the indirect tradition, in Latin versions of both Rufinus and Jerome – and of other exegetes who followed him.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
