Combination antiretroviral-therapy (cART) has improved HIV-positive patients mortality and life expectancy. On the other hand, the prevalence of comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease, hepatic and renal disease has increased. Kidney disease is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality, especially if accompanied by older age, diabetes, hypertension, black race and hepatitis C coinfection. Renal function needs to be monitored in order to identify kidney disease during early stages. Even if certain cART regimens have been associated with kidney disease, new antiretroviral drugs with a better toxicity profile are now available. Further studies on these new regimens will bring us information on their role in the management of renal disease among HIV-infected patients.
