The two Bronzes from Riace now in the Museo Archeologico di Reggio Calabria, are almost intact, perfect in their heroic nudity. By comparing their proportions and their pose, we can certainly accept that the two statues resemble each other and that no other statue or painting resembles one of them. It is, therefore, in all likelihood, a statuary group of unitary conception. The artist who conceived it, in other words, deliberately wanted to make the two heroes resemble each other. The only reliable comparisons for the two statues from Riace can be found only in the Roman period, with reproductions of a scene with five characters (in some cases only three or four) depicted on archaeological objects of various kinds. However, they all refer to a not usual version of the myth of the final fratricidal duel between Eteocles and Polynices. The scholars have related this scene with a famous bronze group of Pythagoras of Rhegion: the Fratricidae.

Abstract
The scholars have related this scene with a famous bronze group of Pythagoras of Rhegion: the Fratricidae.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
