Abstract

A relentless evolution has concerned the production of windows-frame since, by virtue of an environmental quality, they have been recognized as the most vulnerable zone of the envelope in reduction of energy dispersion. The economic incentives activated in recent years to encouraging their replacement have had a good response, without being prefi gured appropriate strategies aimed at decommissioning to avoid the simple conferment to landfi ll. Having acquired the thermal cutting concepts, of multiple beats and preformed seals, capable of improving the air tightness performance and the thermic insulation during the management phase, the producers are back to refl ecting on the materials with which to make the frames, adopting profi les with foamed, insulating counter frames and the accessories capable of introducing new functions. Sustainability principles have entered this path, with original reflections on the possibilities of pre and post-consumer recycling, following the philosophy C2C, from cradle to cradle. The orientation is of reconsider waste not for make inferior quality products but rather to revive higher production lines. Some manufacturers begin to recover wood, metal and PVC from disused windows (that otherwise would transfer to landfi lls or treated with processes of down-cycling), with the aim of creating design products or artistic installations, or re-use these materials, together with others, also “natural”, for giving life to “new”, in sense of innovative, profi les to be assembled. The study undertaken aims to analyse some “creative” signals of upcycling in production fi eld - researches, experimentations, commercial outcomes - to identify it lines of development, but also the tools and initiatives in the institutional sphere able to trigger and support virtuous cycles - calls for tenders, award criteria, guidelines.
