For his PhD thesis, Walter Leopold (born to German parents, Bologna 1882-Sulazano 1976), intended to address the theme of the presence of Lombard colonies in Sicily in the 12th century. He arrived in Sicily in 1910, to study the medieval architecture of four small towns - Castrogiovanni (now known as Enna), Piazza Armerina, Nicosia and Randazzo - in which “Lombard and Gaul-Italic” adventurers, mercenaries and migrants had arrived in settlement, from northern Italy, France and England. The young German noted common parameters in the foundations and architectural details of civil buildings, churches and bell towers, through which he then began to identify the characteristics of the medieval architecture introduced by northern populations following the arrival of the Normans. Leopold was especially interested in the external structural elements, original features and details of the buildings. He documented construction details, epigraphs and architectural details, omitting non-original sections, sometimes reshaping their original configuration in hypothetical depictions.
