Abstract

Macroalgae can be consumed directly, as a food, or used in many others field from agricultural to pharmaceutical, so shows a wide-ranging use in many industries. Intending to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in EU, macroalgae can represent a means to reach that targets , at least half of them, they have a very positive impact on the environment, because they reduce CO2, reduce nutrients (N & P) and many more thing. Nowadays an innovative industry, such as the algae industry, must be seen from the perspective of a biorefinery so that several products can derive from a single source. In Italy, macroalgae industry does not appear a widespread sector but, the coastal habitats can offer an opportunity to enhance the endemic and alien species as a resource in the Bio-based Circular Economy framework. In particular, a screening on the applicative potential of endemic and alien seaweeds from Italian coast could be provide. Some examples could be deliver from many species in different genera: from the green algae Ulva spp. as a source of phycocolloids and alcolic raw extracts for cosmetics, ethanolic extracts for anti-metanogenic purpose from the red alga Asparagopsis spp. and sulphated polysaccharides from the alien brown algae Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum muticum have shown interesting results in the veterinary-pharmaceutical and energy sectors. Furthermore, is very important to provide a DNA labelling to relate an efficient products with a genetical species.
