Nocturnal leg cramps (NLCs) are a relatively common, idiopathic or symptomatic disorder, increasing in frequency with age. No apparent gender differences apply. Pain due to violent, brisk contractions of the lower limb muscles may wake the patient and interfere with nighttime and daytime activities, depending on their severity. Recognizing potential secondary causes (vascular, metabolic, neurological) would enable better etiological treatment. Several mimics, including other sleep-related movement disorders (SRMDs), are essential to exclude for a thorough differential diagnosis. Both preventative and symptomatic treatment may apply, and a stepwise pharmacological approach should be encouraged.

Abstract
Nocturnal leg cramps (NLCs) are a relatively common, idiopathic or symptomatic disorder, increasing in frequency with age. No apparent gender differences apply. Pain due to violent, brisk contractions of the lower limb muscles may wake the patient and interfere with nighttime and daytime activities, depending on their severity. Recognizing potential secondary causes (vascular, metabolic, neurological) would enable better etiological treatment. Several mimics, including other sleep-related movement disorders (SRMDs), are essential to exclude for a thorough differential diagnosis. Both preventative and symptomatic treatment may apply, and a stepwise pharmacological approach should be encouraged.Pubblicazioni consigliate
