This work analyzes the Italian idiomatic expressions that originate from the Bible. In the first section, I try to introduce my topic describing its socio-cultural context and I point out both the different ways of contact to biblical texts (diffusion, use, receipt) and the key-role played by the Vulgata of Jerome. Obviously, the Bible is the book that has mostly influenced European languages, and biblical vocabulary is one of the most relevant sources of idiomatic expressions for Italian (and for all the different dialects spoken in Italy). In this paper, I show a corpus of idioms of Italian language (in particular, different types of locutions with idiomatic value), that are based on the Bible. These idioms could be categorized into “literal biblical expressions” and “situational biblical expressions”. Moreover, I describe formation mechanisms and re-using processes undergone by these biblical expressions through formal and semantic adaptations as well as repositionings on the pragmatic-functional axes.
