In an historical contest of lack of legislative and judicial protection, the end of the 19th century saw the rise of a new phenomenon of spontaneous association among businessmen aimed at fighting business malpractices. In the textile industry, the “Unione commercianti in manifatture di Milano”, created in 1898, protected member’s credit right involved in insolvency proceedings, through the analysis of accounting books and promoting unitary legal actions in all the Italian Courts in 1,745 bankruptcies, defaults and insolvencies proceedings. Through the exam of the accounting analysis made by the Union it was possible to understand the role that accounting analysis can assume in a period of crisis of values accompanied by a spread of commercial fraud and business malpractice, as a tool to adjudicate economic and social contrasts and claims.
