The paper reconstructs the history of the cooperation between the French writer André Gide and the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky around the Perséphone, the verse drama on the myth of Persephone which Gide had worked on since the end of the nineteenth century. Begun under the best auspices, the cooperation became more and more difficult over time, eventually leading to the rupture between its protagonists; at the same time, the documentation on the preparatory phases of the work allows us to focus, in addition to the work carried out by Gide on his sources, in particular the Homeric hymn To Demeter, on Gide’s and Stravinsky’s opposite conceptions about the relationship between poetry, music and staging and the theoretical presuppositions which inspired those conceptions, thus illuminating a significant moment of early twentieth century European culture.
