Le città invisibili della Sicilia. Rileggendo Calvino e Vittorini

Il fascio di relazioni già consolidatesi tra geografia e letteratura - basati sul presupposto che l’analisi spaziale può ricorrere a fonti indirette come i testi letterari e poetici che offrono alla comprensione geografica una visione nuova della realtà fondata sullo spazio vissuto in funzione della propria territorialità – offre lo spunto per una rilettura del romanzo Le città del mondo di Elio Vittorini e di Le città invisibili di Italo Calvino, al fine di cogliere una interpretazione dei fenomeni insediativi siciliani in chiave progettuale. In Sicilia più che in altre terre, difatti, tra i centri minori che pullulano nell’entroterra, esistono energie millenarie che, invisibili, attendono di essere liberate dalla gabbia teorica in cui sono state rinchiuse, per essere proiettate verso una nuova fruizione, uno slancio vitale all’interno delle stesse direttrici. È uno stimolo, quindi, a far emergere le potenzialità di cui è portatrice la cultura dei luoghi; a ripensare i territori come modello di sviluppo sostenibile, per ridare senso a quei centri, i cui colori e le cui voci provengono dall’invisibile che si nasconde dietro o dentro l’apparire. The strong relationship between geography and literature, based on the premise that the spatial analysis can use indirect sources such as literary and poetic texts that give geographic understanding a new vision of reality, based on the living space according to ones own territoriality – offers the key for a new reading of the novel Le città del mondo by Elio Vittorini and of the Le città invisibili by Italo Calvino, so as understand the interpretation of Sicilian settlement phenomena in a projectile way. In fact, in Sicily more than in other places, among the very many smaller centres of the inland area of the region, there are millenarian energies that, invisible, wait to be freed from the theoretical cage where they have been locked up in and be projected towards a new use, giving momentum to directives themselves. Therefore, it is a stimulus to bring forth the potentialities of the culture of places; to rethink territories as a model for sustainable development, to give back meaning to those centres whose colours and voices come from the invisible and hide behind and within the appearing.
