On 16th February 1804 an American brig approached the Philadelphia Frigate and set it on fire. This was happening in the harbour of Tripoli. But another odd thing was curious: that an American brig was commanded by a man from Messina. To understand this peculiar war event we’ll need to take several steps back and look to the wider picture of a Mediterranean determined by the age of Napoleon, and the first appearance of the American Navy in this area.
