The essay analyses the structure and content of an American web archive of political commercials from Presidential campaigns. Web archives are defined as web genres with the subsequent distinction into subgenres. A new approach to content indexation is presented along with the analysis of the biographical commercial subgenre. The essay concludes with some consideration about the way identities are shaped in the commercials of the archive and how, in turn, they shape and condition the archive's own identity, the way it is structured and the way it works as a cultural artifact.

Abstract

The essay analyses the structure and content of an American web archive of political commercials from Presidential campaigns. Web archives are defined as web genres with the subsequent distinction into subgenres. A new approach to content indexation is presented along with the analysis of the biographical commercial subgenre. The essay concludes with some consideration about the way identities are shaped in the commercials of the archive and how, in turn, they shape and condition the archive's own identity, the way it is structured and the way it works as a cultural artifact.
