Abstract

The Internet can be analysed both in terms of socio-cultural identity and in terms of compositional identity – at least in theory. Central to the view of websites presented in this paper is the belief that a combined both/and methodological approach is as desirable in reconstructing Internet’s identity and transitions that have taken place in its brief history. Interaction with the Internet is, temporarily, characterised by a blend of fully automatic word-based techniques as regards socio-cultural identity but semi-automatic intersemiotic techniques as regards compositional identity. To make any headway as regards this and other methodological issues it is necessary to work within the framework of such projects as the Living Knowledge (livingknowledge-project.eu/) capable, thanks to the interdisciplinary approach, of breaking new ground as regards solutions to such issues as associating a socio-cultural and semiotic framework for the analysis of social diversity with the development of the appropriate Internet websearch tools.
