How do firm relationships and capabilities contribute to technological development and regional innovation and growth? Drawing upon (co)evolutionary theories in eco-nomic geography and deriving insights from relational and capabilities perspectives in strategic management, the purpose of the chapter is to unpack the interplay between specific local factors and firm-level mechanisms that lead to the creation of new tech-nologies and contribute to regional development. Empirical evidence are drawn from the in depth scrutiny of the nanotech cluster of Catania located in Southern Italy. Spe-cifically, our analysis sheds light on the genetic traits of the Catania area when the main local firm, namely STMicroelectronics, engaged in a strategic coupling with the local research system, thereby laying the foundation of its technological preadapta-tion.

Abstract
How do firm relationships and capabilities contribute to technological development and regional innovation and growth? Drawing upon (co)evolutionary theories in eco-nomic geography and deriving insights from relational and capabilities perspectives in strategic management, the purpose of the chapter is to unpack the interplay between specific local factors and firm-level mechanisms that lead to the creation of new tech-nologies and contribute to regional development. Empirical evidence are drawn from the in depth scrutiny of the nanotech cluster of Catania located in Southern Italy. Spe-cifically, our analysis sheds light on the genetic traits of the Catania area when the main local firm, namely STMicroelectronics, engaged in a strategic coupling with the local research system, thereby laying the foundation of its technological preadapta-tion.Pubblicazioni consigliate
