In the comparison oJ the tributes to 150 years oJ the Italian Unification and the l00th anniversary oJ the war oJ Libya, it stands to reason the marginai position oJ the latter within the framework oJ the ltalian collective reconstruction. Furthennore, it is also evident by comparing the production oJ essays, the discrepancy between Italy and the United States, which were engaged making war against Tripoli between 1801 and 1805. What associates these two countries is the birth oJ the State and then the Jormation oJ a national identity. In the first years oJ the 19th century the Lybian mission provokes in the United States a national-patriotic pride: even if war is not going so well, but on this question there are some fundamental matters or principles with patriotic interests and Proto- Nationalism. By comparison with the American case, we can examine the L ybian war oJ 1911, wondering if it is possible to correlate the colonial experience and the building - or the strengthening - oJ a generai national identity in Italy. The operation, first Liberal and then Fascist, tries to build the myth oJ the "good Italian" exploiting the migration questionoIt is transJerredt o war the problem oJ the definition oJ a well- Jounded national identity, after 50 years oJ unification from on high. But an historical consideration on the outcome is lacking because oJ the way in which the Italian colonialism ends, through the deJeat during the Second World War. After long removalso J this questionoth e Italian studies are in a new stage, rich in results and researches.
