The primary condition to let a republic live and grow is embodied in the capacity of the citizen to submit its own good to the public one; only in this context, according to Machiavelli, political virtue joins military virtue because republic is the common good and the virtuous citizen, dedicating his life to the same republic, concurs to pursue the common objective. People can build a good republic only through their own laboriousness, honesty, simplicity. The public good must be the aim of a good government, and for this purpose is necessary to sacrifice the individual interests in favour of the community.
