This introductory chapter introduces to the methane catalytic chemistry, evidencing how there is a changing landscape for research in this area, due to new scientific developments and industrial opportunities deriving from the availability of natural gas (related to shale gas basins and stranded NG wells) as well as socio-economic pulling forces. This chapter introduces to the different possibilities of direct conversion natural gas (eg. not passing through syngas formation), analysing then in a more detail the recent developments on gas -phase processes: oxidative coupling, direct methane conversion to methanol or formaldehyde, methane aromatization and methane conversion via halomethane.

Abstract
This introductory chapter introduces to the methane catalytic chemistry, evidencing how there is a changing landscape for research in this area, due to new scientific developments and industrial opportunities deriving from the availability of natural gas (related to shale gas basins and stranded NG wells) as well as socio-economic pulling forces. This chapter introduces to the different possibilities of direct conversion natural gas (eg. not passing through syngas formation), analysing then in a more detail the recent developments on gas -phase processes: oxidative coupling, direct methane conversion to methanol or formaldehyde, methane aromatization and methane conversion via halomethane.Pubblicazioni consigliate
