How to Set Up a Hysteroscopic Unit

The progression of gynaecological diagnostic and operative procedures has made a giant leap in the last 15–20 years: actually, some of the innovations that we are currently using in daily practice were almost unimaginable few years ago. These rapid changes opened new scenarios for the management of several intrauterine pathologies: in this regard, hysteroscopy is a brilliant example how integrated technological developments and continuous research of new improvement of techniques lead us to tailor the best approach for our patients. This chapter aims to introduce the reader to how to set up a hysteroscopic unit with a detailed overview about the main equipment necessary in ambulatory setting (both for diagnostic and office procedures) and operating room. In particular, we discuss how to obtain intracavitary vision and distension, the indications and functions of different hysteroscopes, the most common hysteroscopic instruments (cold, unipolar and bipolar) and some new devices (intrauterine morcellators and the hysterobasket). Finally, we take the opportunity to stress some consideration about the maintenance of equipment and organisation of the ambulatory setting and operating room for hysteroscopy.
