This study aims to reconstruct the reflection on alienatio mentis within the «Passiones celeres» and the «Passiones tardae» by Caelius Aurelianus, and to highlight the interest that mental disease had within Soranus’ Methodism, faithfully preserved in the treatises by Caelius. To do so, particular attention has been paid to the importance given to this kind of disease in the text, to its thorough descriptions, to the effort both theoretical and doctrinal made by Caelius to define the mental disease in relation to contiguous pathological states. After introductory clarifications on terminology, this research examines the alienatio as pathological condition, as it is described by Caelius vs. vinolentia (drunkennes) and pressura (stupor) , pointing out its inclusion within the doctrinal system of the Methodism. In the second part of this paper are examined both the diseases in which mental disease is a symptom, permanent or temporary, and the peculiar manifestations of mental disease within different pathological contexts.
