Extremophiles are organisms that can survive in conditions that are prohibitive for other organisms in very extreme environments. Such organisms are able to survive under environmental stress conditions thanks to the synthesizing of the trehalose, a disaccharide that is revealed to be a cryptobiotic-activating substances. In this work five extreme environments are reported, highlighting the causes that make these environments so extreme, such high value of pH, high salinity, high and low temperature, high aridity. The organisms living in these environments which synthesize trehalose are also dealt for highlighting the properties of bioinspired systems.

Abstract

Extremophiles are organisms that can survive in conditions that are prohibitive for other organisms in very extreme environments. Such organisms are able to survive under environmental stress conditions thanks to the synthesizing of the trehalose, a disaccharide that is revealed to be a cryptobiotic-activating substances. In this work five extreme environments are reported, highlighting the causes that make these environments so extreme, such high value of pH, high salinity, high and low temperature, high aridity. The organisms living in these environments which synthesize trehalose are also dealt for highlighting the properties of bioinspired systems.
