The present paper offers a systematic literature review of the innovation and regional development branches in order to dig deeper in the relationships between the actors within the innovation system that help the technological development of the territories. In so doing we highlight the key roles played by the regions in the economic and technological development as well as point the attention to how the regional development contributes in shaping the industrial sectors and to how national and regional policies intervene in boosting the innovative capacities of all the actors involved.
