In very recent years, many long span bridges have been built throughout the world to carry both trains and heavy road vehicles. The “Messina Strait Bridge” will hold the record for the longest single span suspension bridge, more than 1.6 times the actual longest main span bridge. The location in which the “Messsina Strait Bridge” will be built presents many difficulties from morphological and tectonic points of view as well as for other natural phenomena. These difficulties, together with the colossal dimensions for the bridge, required several decades to a lot of scientists and specialists to deepen all the engineering aspects of the bridge design. Aim of this chapter is to analyze the main engineering aspects describing the solution adopted in the “Messsina Strait Bridge” design. To this end, after a brief introduction where the main characteristics of suspension bridges are described, the engineering solutions adopted to resist natural actions and anthropic loads are analyzed. It has to be emphasized that for the complexity of the argument this chapter cannot be exhaustive, but it can help the readers to know the main problems associated to the construction of the “Messsina Strait Bridge.” Further details on the covered topics can be found in the referenced books and papers.
