This contribution adopts a contrastive approach in order to analyse the criteria that underlie the compilation of Lexical Minima in Russian and European language teaching before assessing the state of studies on a Lexical Minimum for Ukrainian. With reference to the qualitative parameters of the latter, it is proposed that the functionality of a Lexical Minimum may be improved by focusing on the lexical combinability of its words in order to optimize the assimilation of the various types of word combinations and to enhance the development of language production skills.
