BACKGROUND: There has been a preponderance of burnout in the area of health (1-2) and among oncologists (3-4-5), with a decrease over the years of career (9). This can increase the risk of medical errors and reduce work performance. The studies show that there are high levels of stress (15-16-17), and Depression (18-19-20-21) among medical students. low levels of awareness (22) and Emotional Intelligence (23-24) are considered to be responsible for the professional (32) and academicals (30-31) success. STUDY’S OBJECTIVE: The goal was to highlight the influence that academia and the hospital structure have on the lives of oncology and medical students. This examining the trend over time of burnout, perceived stress and depression. We also explore the influence of emotional intelligence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Assessment of burnout (MBI) (35) on eleven oncologists and comparison with 12 years previous. Analyzed perceived stress (PSS-10) (36) and Depression (BDI-II) (37) trends on 546 medical students, also the new-graduates. Emotional intelligence (EIS), (38) was studied in a selected group of students. RESULTS: earned high values of burnout (EE Average=24, DP Average=5, PA average=37), Perceived Stress (average 21.9 SD±5.99) and Depression (average 14.8 ds± 9.3). Burnout decreases with career years (45.6% of doctors in 2018 and 64.3% twelve years earlier) in doctors achieving good personal realization. PSS-10 and BDI-II have a peculiar pattern over the study years and are statistically significant in correlation (p<0.001). The EIS factors have a strong negative correlation with Depression (F1/BDI p=0.02; F2/BDI p<0.01) and Perceived stress (F2/PSS p<0.01) CONCLUSION: the strong influence by the hospital structure and the course of studies on doctors and students is confirmed by the worrying levels of Burnout, Depression and Stress and by the trend of these over the years. Emotional intelligence can be a key point to reinforce by activating specific training pathways. New studies should look for the most appropriate and easily integrated methods.
