This essay aims to introduce F.H. Jacobi's understanding of existence (Dasein). We will briefly consider the evolution of such a topic from Jacobi's first encounter with the problem of Metaphysics to those few renowned notes that he wrote about man's freedom in his Concerning the Doctrine of Spinoza in Letters to Herr Moses Mendelssohn. Among different sources mentioned in the introductory chapter, we will evaluate the influence that two so-called Kant's pre-critical essays might have had on the young Jacobi. We will see how we may deem that Jacobi's conception of Dasein is metaphysical, and in which sense his criticism against systematic philosophy puts him in relationship with both what precedes and follows German Idealism.
