The essay aims at rediscovering and reconstructing the musical landscape of the city of Modena, the seat of one of the most prestigious courts of the Italian Renaissance: The House of Este. During the 17th century, Modena became an important musical centre thanks to the dukes of Este. The court attracted composers and musicians from different parts of Europe and organized magnificent performances. Especially, during Francesco II d'Este's reign (1674-94) the musical production knew the highest and most intense moment. Francesco II enlarged the court orchestra and purchased a large collection of music for the ducal library. The music begins to appear in the public spaces of the duchy and became a central part of the urban culture. The court itself contributed to the construction of the city musical identity.
