Since their appearance between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, newspapers have never stopped commenting on problems related to language, helping to shape the socio-cultural and political debate of a given historical period. Based on the historical-retrospective study of some eighteenth-nineteenth-century European periodicals, the communicative forms of the public debate on language will be discussed. Through the presentation of some articles published between 1815 and 1861, the contribution aims to deepen the linguistic discussions of the pre-unification newspapers around the use of language on commercial signs: an attempt will therefore be made to draw a picture that considers the relationship between language, society and public communication.

Abstract
Since their appearance between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, newspapers have never stopped commenting on problems related to language, helping to shape the socio-cultural and political debate of a given historical period. Based on the historical-retrospective study of some eighteenth-nineteenth-century European periodicals, the communicative forms of the public debate on language will be discussed. Through the presentation of some articles published between 1815 and 1861, the contribution aims to deepen the linguistic discussions of the pre-unification newspapers around the use of language on commercial signs: an attempt will therefore be made to draw a picture that considers the relationship between language, society and public communication.Pubblicazioni consigliate
