The present research aims to explain the study of the transformations and the projects for a stable definition of the Lazzaretto of Messina from the end of the 17th century. After the earthquake of 1783 the Spanish government decided to repair the existing Lazaretto and to erect a second one. Pompeo Schiantarelli (1746-1805) planned a new structure as was Ercole Lauria’s (1806-1817) project for a Lazaretto in another place. The 1908 earthquake put an end to the failed construction of the hospital.
