The Pergamon vase stands out within the class of marble griffin cauldrons, a type of funerary semata that appeared in Attica in the fourth century BC. By reexamining the antiquarian tradition, the author clears up some misunderstandings concerning the discovery of this vase and its original function. Her study of the frieze with the horserace sheds light on the cultural background of the artist and highlights several similarities with the artistic production of the East-Mediterranean area (Xanthos). The Pergamon vase is a rare specimen of those columnar monuments that constituted a landmark in thefunerary and sacred landscape of the city in the Late Classical and Hellenistic periods.
