In Palermo, at the end of the 18th century, it was chosen the way to train pilots would be through an educational system. The Royal Nautical Seminary was officially founded in 1788 and opened in 1789 by Monsignor Gioeni of the Anjou dukes, who wanted it as an institute «able to supply the city and Sicily» with qualified seafaring men: a nautical college for the instruction of the sailors was thus born.
