Our work aims at analysing the tools that can enable operators and companies of the tourism sector to improve their capability to manage environmental issues and to guarantee the eco-quality of their services. We devote a particular attention to the different forms of certification basing on the introduction of new environmental management tools (regarding both processes and products), with the purpose of assessing to what extent they are diffused, what kind of competitive advantage they can provide and the possible paths for their development. Recent initiatives at the normative level, such as the new Emas Regulation (n. 761/2001), that, explicitly, encourages companies to take indirect aspects into account, and the setting up of the procedures for the definition of an EU Ecolabel for touristic services, are offering to whom operates in this sector a wide range of opportunities to couple environmental improvements with competitive advantages. Within our work, we tried to emphasise mostly Italian experiences, searching for empirical evidences that show the awareness, both on the side of the operators and of the tourists, regarding the need to guarantee sustainable prospects to this natural-resource intensive sector.
